What Makes a Strong Website Hero Image for a Business?

The first image has to do several jobs at once

A website hero image needs to look good, but it also needs to support text, load into the layout correctly and communicate something useful about the company within seconds.

That is why I photograph hero images differently from ordinary portfolio images.

The subject should be clear

A visitor should quickly understand what they are looking at. The image might show the team, the environment, a product or the service in action, but it should not require explanation to make sense.

Leave room for the design

A website designer may need a headline and button on the left or right side. If every important detail fills the frame, the text will cover the subject or require an awkward crop.

I often create compositions with intentional negative space for this reason.

Shoot wider than the final crop

Desktop, tablet and mobile versions may crop the same image differently. Capturing extra space gives the designer options.

A sturdy professional tripod can help maintain precise composition for architecture and controlled commercial setups where alignment matters.

Match the brand tone

A financial company may want clean, confident imagery. A restaurant may want warmth and texture. A technology company may want modern environment and people. The hero should feel like the business before the visitor reads the headline.

Consider video when movement tells more

A short, subtle hero film can be effective when the business experience is difficult to communicate in one still frame. The movement should support the page rather than distract from the call to action.

If your website homepage is using a stock image, an old photograph or a crop that never quite works, I can create photography and video specifically for the dimensions and message your site needs.
